Running for Human Compassion

Running for Human Compassion

Human Compassion

On September 29, 2013, I will run the Berlin Marathon. Please join me to make this run about more (and about less) by supporting the Human Compassion HIV/AIDS orphanage in Ghana.

In 2011, I ran my first marathon in New York and came back with two goals for a future marathon: run to raise money for charity and run a marathon under four hours. I felt quite egotistical running in a shirt with just my name on it, as it seemed like most other runners had shirts that showed their support to good causes. After four hours and nine minutes surrounded by these shirts, I promised myself to run another marathon – this time in support of a charity. It was quite easy to select one, after seeing my GRI colleague Marja Van Der Most dedicate endless energy and many hours to Human Compassion, a grass roots NGO in Accra, Ghana. It is Human Compassion’s fundamental belief that HIV/AIDS sufferers are entitled to the same respect, love, opportunities and quality of life as everyone else.

Human Compassion was started in 2004 by Linda Akyaa Mensay, a nurse from a local HIV hospital, where she educated women and helped HIV infected expecting mothers to deliver and raise healthy babies. She invested her time, her salary and the proceeds of her internet/copy shop to fund Human Compassion. In 2006, she opened up her home to orphaned HIV+ children, to provide schooling, clothing, healthy meals and love to these children and young adults.

More than ever, the Human Compassion Organization needs our support. Sadly, in August, Linda lost her own personal battle against AIDS, leaving the orphanage without its much needed financial support. Through crowdfunding, Marja already raised sufficient money to start a fantastic sustainable aid project; to set up a shop to make the orphanage support itself – but more help is needed.

Please join me in supporting Human Compassion. I will donate €100 to kick us off. And if I run the marathon in less than four hours? For every minute under four hours, I will add another €10. Please state your support amount as a comment to this post and I will send you the payment details. And please feel free to provide an extra incentive to make me run faster! Let’s see how much money we can raise together!
